Following the credo that bigger is undeniably better, Sony released a new Android based smartphone with a 4.2-inches wide touchscreen. Although the launch took place on April 1st, this phone is most definitely no joke. Equipped with the BRAVIA engine for optimized picture and a resolution of 854 x 480, the Xperia Arc is muscling its way into the very crowded market of similarly equipped phones.
The 8.1 megapixel camera features a LED flash and even video light, but Sony has added an interesting little implement, namely the Exmor R for mobile CMOS sensor, which is supposed to shoot HD quality video and pictures despite low light environments. While the limitation to 720p may be a bit of a disappointment, because similar phones by the competition go up to 1080p, the camera provides additional features, such as digital zoom, face detection, red-eye reduction, video stabilizer, touch focus, and also a quirky smile detection feature.
Besides the camera there are plenty of other features that warrant mentioning, but firstly let us have a look at the design. The name, Xperia Arc, is evident when you look at the ultra slim phone from the side. The backside is curved in a really posh arc, squeezing the midsection of the phone down to staggering 8.7 millimeters.
Other features are all within the currently expected ranges, 512MB RAM, 16GB microSD on board, with the capability to expand up to 32GB, Android 2.3, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, microUSB 2.0, aGPS, Wi-Fi and a HDMI output, which allows reproduction of the 720p video material. The integrated music player puts any Walkman to shame; all social network integration is with Android already an expected feature and it was about time that Sony finally catches up with the competition. With the two releases, Xperia Arc and Xperia Play, Sony Ericsson reclaims some if not all of its bruised ego.
