The History Of Samsung Contract Phones

SAMSUNG owes its history to Lee Byung-chull who in 1938 came to settle near Daegu city, Korea. In 1947 he set up a head office in Seoul. From then on after the company had setup the largest sugar refinery and a woolen mill in the country the company diversified and transformed into what it is today. The aim of Lee was to make Samsung the industry leader and it diversified into various businesses like insurance, securities and retail. Lee stressed on industrialization and focused on protecting his brands and enterprises from competition and assisting them financially.

The Samsung telecommunication network was launched in 1977 and the mobile communications business was launched in 1983. In 1986 Samsung released its first built in car phone but it did not succeed due to quality issues. But the company did not lose heart because of this failure. They spend the next two years in research and development and then launched their first mobile phone the SH 100 in 1988. This was the first ever mobile made in Korea. Although Samsung introduced a new model every year, their sale did not go up from one or two thousand sets.

From 1993 to 1996 the company’s top management worked very hard to improve the quality of the hand set and developed a team who would work on the improvement of connectivity which was a problem due to the mountain topography of Korea. In 1993 the new model SH 700 was finally presented by the development team. At that time it was the lightest mobile in the market with a compact design and very good quality. The very next year SH-770, brand name “Any Call” was introduced. This was an upgraded better version of the previous model. From then onwards it was a winning situation for Samsung.

1996 saw Samsungs first CDMA phone. “Light” and “slim” had become Samsung’s trademark. Samsung’s first PSC phone was introduced in the market with its sleek design and innovative features and was targeted at the young generation who were particularly inspired by the features. With SG-200 Samsung stepped in the world of GSM and was specially designed to attract the European market but was not very successful so the strategy was revised and SG-600 was born. Samsung has twice been awarded “Best Manufacturer” by Mobile News Awards.
