Palm computing a firm registered in 1996, and initially a division of US Robotics, developed the first generation of Palm mobiles. This first generation was typically called a Pilot PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), hence the name Palm-Pilot was given to these devices. The inventors of the Palm Pilot were three individuals Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan who were also the founder for Palm Computing. The main reason to setup this company was to research and produce software that recognized handwriting, and while able to come up with software called graffiti, they realized that they could also create a better hardware. The advent of Palm era took the mobile world by a storm; these handheld devices were widely used for people on the go, who wanted to break free from punching in digits and numbers to record everything. The use of handwriting with the help of a pencil like stick called the stylus the jotting down of ideas through simple handwriting made Palm very convenient and fun to have. The corporate sector was specially moved with the arrival of these Palm mobiles as they broke free from the traditional phones. The businessmen and traders and sales people, etc, could very conveniently keep records while making calls using the same device. Initially Palms were without the usual infra red ports, backlight or a flash memory, but constant up gradation and new models removed the problem. The Palms eventually evolved into smartphones, or commonly known as mobiles, that run on Palm OS, Web OS and Windows Mobile. It was announced in April of 2010 that HP was to acquire the Palm, and subsequently all new brands of Palm announced were recognized as HP devices. The next generations of HP webOS devices include HP Veer smartphone, HP Pre smartphone and HP Touch Pad. The innovations of Palm acquired by HP thus ensure the availability and continuity of rich history of innovation.
